Journey to 50 – Spotlight – Are You Okay?

As I get closer and closer to my 50th book, I can’t help but think about my very first one. Angel’s story came to me during a period of dark depression. Someone brought up the idea of how people with severe mental illness find their happily ever after. I decided that I wanted to write that book. I honestly needed to write that book.

This book was my second or third attempt at doing National Novel Writing Month. I hadn’t been successful before and really wanted to give it another try. I was in the position to have plenty of time on my hands to write so I decided to take advantage. This was my first successful attempt at the challenge.

Angel’s story came to life at a really rapid pace. I didn’t plan any of it out. The story unfolded as it was written. There was a very long time when I didn’t know how it was going to end.

Are You Okay? is as much a story about Angel battling her demons as it is a story about her finding love. This book is the first example of me walking the very fine line between romance and women’s fiction. It deals with mental illness (PTSD), sexual assault, and abortion.

Having completed my degree in publication’s design and creative writing, with a focus on self publishing, I decided to actually try my hand at publishing my first book. I really wanted, and still want, as many people as possible to read Angel’s story.
