Journey to 50 – Spotlight – Days of Summer

Days of Summer is book 17 in my catalogue.

This book was truly a labor of love. I typically write in chronological order. This book came to me in bits and pieces. I am a pantser. With this book, I decided to try and use an outline to help me deal with all the random parts that came to me. To be honest with y’all, it was an absolute nightmare. I did everything that other writer’s suggest to do. I did a whole character sketch of Summer. I had a full outline of everything except the ending of the book.

What I learned from writing this book was that my writing process is mine. It is great to take advice from other writers, especially when you are trying to find your groove. But what works for you doesn’t necessarily work for others. It is important to get your own rhythm. Once I was able to fall into my usual groove with this book, the words started to really flow and the story started to come together. It took me taking a step back from the project and shelving it for a while for that to happen.

This was one of the first stories where I had a whole vision of what the characters looked like. I had celebrities that inspired each of the main characters in this story. I can’t say if the visuals helped or hindered the process. They were fun to come up with though.

Summer is complex simplicity. She has had to deal with serious body image and self esteem issues. She has a nasty temper. She really wants to find a girlfriend that won’t ask her to leave her husband. The story starts when she is a child and follows her well into adulthood. It ends when she finally gets her version of happily ever after.

This book is top 5 for me on the list of my books that I recommend readers give a chance.
